Linus Torvalds and LINUX

Linus Torvalds is a Finnish American, who is a software engineer and who developed the famous Operating system called Linux. Linus Torvalds attended the University of Helsinki between 1988 and 1996, graduating with a masters degree in computer science. Torvalds joined the army and his academic year was interrupted. In 1990 he returned to his studies and where he first was exposed to UNIX.  He started programming on January 5th,1991 when he purchased Intel 80386- based IBM PC. He has been a programmer for 22 years now. The initial release for LINUX was on 1991. Linux is a open source Operating System which is modeled on UNIX. Mainly programmers use LINUX as it is a low cost and is easily customizable and can be used on servers, mainframes, embedded devices, desktops.
Linux is very difference from windows and mac operating systems. Linux has very different GUI. Linux is very cheap than Windows based operating system. Unlike windows LINUX can be installed on wide variety of hardware. There are only two GUI's for LINUX " KDE and GNOME " and it is also optional if you want to use the GUI or not as a user can simply use commands to use it.The Windows GUI is an integral component of the OS. The file extensions for the LINUX are different than windows or mac OS.
The advantage of Linux are :
1. It is virus free
2. easily customizable
3. Cheap to get
4. Flexibility among devices
5. Does not need a GUI to use it
6. It is very stable
7. it does not slow down on time.

The disadvantages of LINUX are:
1. Many windows programs may not work on it
2. There is a learning curve to the people who are new to LINUX
3. There is no standard edition
4.  It has a patchier support for drivers

  1. This post probably had the most clear-cut pro and con examples out of all the other posts currently up. But Linux being free isn't be a disadvantage, that is why is it is as popular as it is. The fact that anyone can freely edit it to their own liking is why both Linux and Linus are both highly regarded and I think that should be changed on your post.

    1. Yeah i just realized that i posted that in disadvantage, and yes the fact that Linux can be freely edited by anyone is a huge advantage for people who can exploit it and create new programs through it.

  2. Jaskirat, I like your post an I like the image (we used the same one!). I thought it was interesting to know that the name Linux was derived from Linus' name and Unix put together. Torvalds seems like an arrogant person though from a couple articles i read about his actions in the work place. The University of Helsinki seems like a pretty prestigious place to go. I agree with you about Linux being cheaper and that it is free in some cases. I think that it being free is more of a advantage rather than a disadvantage. There are also viruses for Linux, they're just less common because there are less users ans less people writing viruses.

    1. Yes i thought the same thing when i read Linus and Linux they sound too similar to each other, but it was new for me to know that Linus is arrogant, and also i realized from christopher's post above that i put linux being free as a disadvantage.

  3. Interesting post, I like it. I don't understand why he gave away this technology for free. Its quite cheap too, I feel like he could have made a fortune but he had to be nice. I however didn't know it had two GUI's I thought it was just KDE I didn't know about GNOME. I liked how you set up your post with supporting facts. IT made it extremely clear and straight forward. Good job.
